Members of U3A’s across Wales and England have taken part in 2018 U3A Welsh Open Table Tennis Championships run by Table Tennis Wales at the National Centre in Cardiff

This year, Chepstow U3A came out as the overall winners – with their team of Sue Case and Lyndon Oliver beating an amazing 34 teams taking part.

Malvern U3A were this year’s runners up and Ludlow taking third place.

34 was more than double the number of teams on last year’s inaugural competition again hosted by Table Tennis Wales -the national governing body for the sport. This year the teams came from six U3As across Wales and three from England.

U3A Trustee for Wales, Hilary Jones said, “This event is just getting even bigger and better.  I am absolutely delighted with its popularity and success which this year was more than twice the size of last time.  U3A has increasing numbers of its members across the country taking part in table tennis activity groups and keeping both their mind and body active.

“Well done to all who competed in the Championships and congratulations to the winners. My sincere thanks to Table Tennis Wales and especially Philip Avery for organising the event for U3A”.

Many new networking connections were made between groups during the event with the likelihood of future friendly matches.

Phil Avery from Table Tennis Wales said “It was fantastic to see so many U3As taking part and it was such a fun day. Table Tennis is a great sport for all ages and we look forward to the event hopefully expanding - and going from strength to strength in future years”
