A national weekend of Petanque 2018

The U3A movement has held a national weekend of Pétanque at Hayling Island arranged by the U3A subject adviser, Andrew Lloyd (Malmesbury & District U3A).

U3A Pentanque 5    Teams from eighteen different U3As took part from as far apart as Devon, Cheshire, Essex and Guernsey. The closest team were from Hayling Island!

U3A Pentanque 2    Pétanque is one version of the generic grouping of games of ‘boules’ and involves throwing a ball to a jack intending to score more points than the opposition. There are more than 100 Pétanque groups taking place in the U3A movement.
U3A Pentanque 4b    Andrew, a regional Pétanque player, coach and manager of over 20 years’ experience. said, “Despite consistent rain throughout the weekend which made things pretty uncomfortable for the players it was a very good turn out for this progressive two day competition.
U3A Pentanque 3       This is our third year of running the weekend and this time we had around 160 players in 48 teams. The result of the first day’s play determines which level of competition is played on the Sunday and each level is then sub-divided into Main and Consolage competitions, so we have winners and runners-up in six competitions.

The Championship winners were from Torridge U3A in North Devon. Thank you to U3A South East Trustee Bob Duckmanton who came to support us on the final day and presented the prizes”
