An incredibly-tight annual U3A photography competition went to three tie-breakers before naming Crewkerne & District U3A the winners.

The competition, now in it’s ninth annual year, had the theme of ‘British Landscape.’

Crewkerne and Dorchester U3As both initially tied, scoring 96 points each. When judges, from a panel of U3A members, decided that the trophy should go to the team that scored the most top marks of 10, the teams were once again tied.

To definitively choose a winner, it was decided that one photograph that had been marked 9 must be boosted to a 10. Betty Spanswick’s photograph of Cannignton viaduct was chosen and, with that, Crewkerne & District U3A won the competition.

Dorothy Woods also helped Crewkerne win due to her two top scoring paintings of local beauty spots.

This was part of a particularly busy month for Crewkerne and District U3A which also hosted a series of science lectures. The final lecture, ‘The Science of the Dead’ was so popular that extra chairs had to be brought in for U3A members and members of the public.

Chairperson Sheila Seymour said of the lectures, ‘We wanted to do something that hadn’t been done before. This time we chose the theme of Science and the success of these lectures is the culmination of our wish for U3A to offer something different.
