u3a Subject Advice Science August 2021

I am here to help Science groups to start in U3As and to provide ideas for adding variety to their activities.

I graduated in Pharmacy many years ago.  I was a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology at Manchester University where I was a researcher and teacher.  My research mainly focused on the actions of drugs on smooth muscle and I was a member of the British Pharmacological Society.  My teaching was to a wide variety of students from science students (from BSc Pharmacology to many areas of biology) plus medical, pharmacy, dental and nursing students. Since retirement I have been a member of an NHS Ethics Committee reviewing applications across a wide area of medicine and psychology.

A U3A was established in my home area (Bramhall, Stockport) in 2010 and I joined immediately, curious as to what it was.  Shortly after I was asked to be External Relations secretary, where I wrote my own job description, and did that for 7 years.  It involved publicity about our U3A in the area and informing members of community matters (local and national) that would be of interest to them.  I established a Science for All group in 2011 and a handful of people met in my lounge.  When numbers grew we moved to rented premises.  Our group activities consist of a mixture of monthly talks, some given by our members, with regularly about 40 people attending, and a couple of visits a year.

The U3A Science Network has held an annual summer meeting since 2006.  I have attended since 2013 and helped organise the event from 2014-17.  Details can be seen at  We now have over 100 members if you would like to be put on the mailing list - register here.

Joining the U3A has given me much pleasure, intellectual stimulation and a wide circle of friends.
